Ann Marie (Knell) Stone passed away on Friday, March 31st 2023 at the age of 79.
Annie was born in Rochester, New York to Edwin and Edna Knell. Raised an “army brat”, she grew up in many different places, including post-war Japan and Germany. When she was 23, she fell in love with Willie Carl Stone Jr. and followed him to Texas; a marriage that lasted 55 years.
Annie was never content with being idle and always found jobs that allowed her to draw on her cheerful and social personality, first at McDonalds, later as an elementary-school Secretary-Registrar in the Austin Independent School District. Due to her time at Williams Elementary and Casey Elementary, a generation of South Austin school kids still remembers her as Ms. Annie, and she could hardly leave the house without bumping into a former student or parent. If she said a trip to the store would take an hour, you could guarantee it would take two, as she’d meet old friends (or make new ones) along the way. Conversation was her favorite pastime, and she never met a stranger in her life. She retired from AISD in 2003 to spend time spoiling her grandchildren, husband and dogs. She loved to read, to dance and to travel, but most of all she loved her family.
Annie is survived by her husband Willie Carl Stone Jr., sons James Stone and John Dingfelder Stone, stepson Willie Carl Stone III as well as six grandchildren (and of course Scooby the dog). She once said her life’s ambition was to be a mother; she was one of the best. A memorial service for friends, family and neighbors will be held in the coming weeks. The family asks that you to bring a smile and a story, because Annie wanted a celebration more than a memorial.
