On December 3, 2018, former Gloversville, NY resident Barbara Ann Young, aged 95, passed away in San Diego, California in the presence of her loving family. Barbara was born in Ottawa, Ohio on August 21, 1923 to Frank and Goldie Mulig, originally of Croatia. They moved to Gloversville when she was about 2 years old. Barbara was married for 25 years to Gerald Ralph Young, a Gloversville native, who died in 1968. In her youth, Barbara was an excellent athlete, captaining her high school basketball and softball teams and winning the Rogers award for her physical fitness. She graduated from Gloversville High School in 1940. As an adult, she took up bowling and at one time was the top woman bowler in Gloversville. She married Gerald, known to all as Jerry, on September 11, 1943 in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Gloversville. During their marriage, Barbara bore five children, two boys and three girls. The family remained in Gloversville until 1962 when Jerry was transferred by General Electric to Huntsville, Alabama where he worked on projects related to the space program. Barb's youngest child, David, was born while they were in Huntsville.
After three years in Huntsville, the family moved to Vestal, NY. After Jerry's passing, Barb went to work in the local school system where she was executive assistant to the assistant superintendent of schools for the next 12 years. During that time, her four oldest children left home for college and employment leaving only David at home with her. In 1980 the two of them moved to the Washington, DC area. She worked as a secretary there for four years before making her final move to San Diego, California in 1984. She lived the remainder of her life in San Diego, spending about six years of that time caring for her own aging mother who lived with her during that period.
Barbara is survived by her five children, Tom Young, Sally Ditto, Diane Schifflin, Susan Koerwer, and David Young as well as 10 grandchildren, and her brother Bob Mulig, who resides in Sarasota, Florida. Her first great-grandchild, a girl, is due to arrive on February 15, 2019.
