Barry Lynn Welch

Barry L. Welch, 76, passed away peacefully in Rancho Mirage, CA on December 1 with his loving family by his side. Barry was born January 5, 1948, in Canton, OH to Richard and Ruth Welch.

He was a 1966 graduate of Minerva High School in Minerva, OH. Barry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vicki (Rue) Welch who he married on August 2, 1969. Survivors also include his daughter Christi (Welch) Wilson, her husband Lance and their two children Woody (19) and Lanny (15), of Indio, CA, as well as a sister Carol DeMonaco of West Palm Beach, FL and sister-in-law Sandy Vandegrift of Minerva, OH. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his Granddog Cozmo Wilson.

Barry retired from General Telephone/Verizon after 35 of years as a cable splicer. He served for many years as secretary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2199 in Minerva, OH. Barry was an avid sports enthusiast and started his bowling career at the age of 14. He was the first person to carry a 200 average at Minerva Bowl and his 756 series in 1973 was the highest recorded at Minerva Bowl at the time. In 2014, he was inducted into the Greater Canton Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He served as director of the GCBA in the late 70’s and was secretary for 20 years. Barry also found a love for the game of golf at an early age, playing on Minerva High School’s golf team and continuing to golf in leagues at the age of 76. A lover of statistics, Barry served as secretary of multiple leagues. He also served as a board member on the Senior Golf Association in Canton, OH.

One of his greatest joys was traveling to California to see his grandchildren, Woody & Lanny, and participate in all of their activities. Whether it was helping with school activities, or watching soccer, football, baseball, softball, or volleyball, Barry was always enthusiastically present. He will be missed by many friends and family members. Per Barry’s wishes, there will be no formal service. His family will celebrate his life privately and remember him forever.
