Benton Hull Porter was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven by our Lord and Savior on January 9, 2025 at the age of 84. Benton was born to J. Miller Porter and Edith Brown Porter on April 30, 1940 in Houston, TX.
Benton graduated from Cisco High School in 1959. After graduating, he attended Cisco Junior College and worked in a warehouse unloading box cars of roofing material to save up enough money to buy a ring for his high school sweetheart, Nancy Park, who graduated from Cisco High School in 1961. They were married later the same year on June 30, 1961. Benton and Nancy both attended North Texas University where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education in 1963. He continued and later obtained a master’s degree in education.
After graduating college, Benton and Nancy moved to Burleson where he landed a job at Burleson High School teaching mechanical drawing and work education, while during the summers, teaching driver education among other jobs. Teaching and helping students is what he loved and was proud of them all. Benton retired from Burleson ISD after 32 years of teaching.
Benton grew up in Houston where some of his fondest memories were riding his bike all around his Rice University neighborhood, going to Galveston with the family where they would pitch a huge tent in the sand and catch crabs for crab boils on the beach, as well as his older brother Miller, taking him out for duck hunts.
Benton’s mom passed away when he was six and he would stay with family friends in Cisco while his dad, who was a CPA and tax attorney, took a train twice a year to California for his job since he did not like to fly. When he was a teenager, he decided he liked Cisco and is where he wanted to stay with the friends he had made. He lived with J.L. and Letha Stafford, who had no children and considered him their son. He enjoyed spending time trapping, fishing and hunting (including rattlesnakes) with his friends.
He loved his family, and we loved him beyond words. He was strong in his faith, an inspiration and an example to all, putting family first, even before himself. Some of his favorite things were spending time with his family, working in the yard, his dogs, especially a rottweiler named Niki, songs from the 50’s, collecting license plates and Lionel trains.
Benton is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Porter. Children, Scott Porter and wife Melanie Porter, Bryan Porter and wife Lorie Porter. Grandchildren, Ally Porter (fiancé, Trey Gruner), Will Porter, Dylan Porter and Ashlynn Porter. He was preceded by his Grandparents, Rev. Hugh Benton Brown and Mary L. Kinser, John Henry Porter and Louise Miller. Parents, J. Miller Porter and Edith Dunkley Porter, J.L. Stafford and Letha Stafford. Siblings, J. Miller Porter Jr., Jane Porter Woods and Ann Porter Moyer.
The celebration of life service to honor the life of Benton Hull Porter will be held on January 28, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Pathway Church, 325 NW Renfro St, Burleson, TX 76028.
