Bernetta Faye Cain Haden was born in Edmond, Oklahoma, August 28, 1953, and passed August 29, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was the third of four children born to Rev. Bernest and Helen Cain. As the first daughter joining two brothers (Bernest Jr. and David), Bernetta certainly brought new perspective to their lives as did the birth of Martha. Bernetta graduated from McCollum High School and continued her education at Trinity University graduating in 1975 with a degree in Biology.
Bernetta’s professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. She was recruited by Southwestern Bell and worked in the Austin and Waco area. Bernetta moved to New Jersey and later Colorado, as a loaned executive to NECA during the reorganization of the Bell system. Following these assignments, she joined AT&T in Dallas and San Antonio. Bernetta had great leadership skills and was known as a problem solver.
In retirement, Bernetta enjoyed many activities. Meeting new friends was a great benefit of her travels. She visited Great Britain, Europe, Greece, Mexico, Brazil, Central America and many places in the U.S. Bernetta especially enjoyed Texas beaches. She enjoyed playing board games and cards…especially Bridge. Volunteering at the Valero Texas Open afforded her the opportunity to meet many champion golfers. Bernetta received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. She was a member of the Single Professionals Network and enjoyed their monthly socials. Bernetta enhanced her gardening skills through her work with the Garden Club. She served on the Santa Fe Trails HOA Board.
Bernetta is survived by her brothers, Bernest (Joan) and David (Kathleen), and brother-in-law Greg Robuck; nieces and nephews: Melissa and Jeff Van Cain (Elliot and Margaret); Bryn and Ben West (Mae and Max); Robert Cain and Erin Justice; Ashley Cain; Spencer Robuck; Mead and Kenzie Robuck; Kelsey Robuck; Angela and Mike Lozano (Brianna and Amanda), and many, many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernest & Helen Cain; her sister, Martha Robuck; and her beloved cats (Kreskin, Sushi and Precious).
Bernetta’s faith was an important part of her life. She was involved in church and continued her spiritual growth. Bernetta prayed daily for her family and friends. She was described by those who knew her as kind, loving, outgoing, sociable and one who never met a stranger. Bernetta was a wonderful daughter, sister, cousin, aunt and loyal friend. While we will miss her, we have been blessed to be loved by her. Special thanks to the caring staff at Waterford on Thousand Oaks, Abundant Hospice and Oak Mist Assisted Living.
