Bobby Gwen Alverson Born March 7, 1931 in Red Bay, Alabama to Cora and Archie Alverson. She passed away peacefully September 17, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 93.
She graduated from Cullman HS in 1949 and attended 2 years at Sacred Heart College. She loved her family which included her parents Cora and Archie Alverson, brothers Horace (wife Louise and kids Jim, Joe); Ted (wife Sue and kids Janice, Linda). Her sisters Marie (husband Ray and kids Bobette, Connie) and Jane (husband Henry and kids Steve, Mary, Pam, David, Paul). She moved to San Antonio in 1951 with Marie and Ray living with them for a little while before moving out on her own. She loved her house and really enjoyed playing catch with Lily her most favorite dog in the world. There were many other animals after Lily but none quite as smart as her. We all loved that dog. Her parents had moved from Alabama to Alice, Texas in 1959. Marie and Ray were living there at that time and gave her plenty of reasons to visit – which she and her best dog Lily did a lot. She would often take the Kalinec brood with her. She was thrilled when her sister Jane and Henry moved to San Antonio with their 5 kids in 1969. She spent many hours with the family enjoying every holiday and other special occasions. It was her niece Pam who first called her ‘Mama Bobby’ and the name stuck. She was a very integral part of their lives. A very adventurous and independent woman who liked to hunt, fish, drink an occasional beer and even once flew in a two-seater prop plane. Her work life was with Allensworth Carnahan Hardware and then McDugal Wholesale Hardware as a bookkeeper from 1951 until she retired in 1995. She loved the work but especially loved the people she worked with. After work on Fridays she would pick up Jane and they would go eat at Windsor Park Mall and then do some shopping. During her retirement years she loved playing solitary on her IPAD, doing crossword puzzles, eating out with friends and going to Silver Sneakers exercise classes. And we wouldn’t put it past her to try and scare away a squirrel or two with her bb gun. She is survived by her sister Jane who resides in San Antonio, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews in Texas and Alabama; preceded in death by her parents Cora and Archie, sister Marie and brothers Ted and Horace. The family held a private service earlier to celebrate the life of Mama Bobby. We will always miss her as she is very dear to our heart.
