Cheryl Welton

Cheryl passed away after an eight-month battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 17, 2017 at age 68.
Born in Damariscotta, Maine to Robert and Mabel McAfee, Cheryl married Wiley Welton in 1968. They were married for 13 years. During her childhood and early adult years, Cheryl survived harsh winters in rural Maine and made a warm, safe home for her family. When jobs became scarce, they made the hard decision to move out West with their daughters Kelly and Erin in hopes for a better life. Driving with everything they owned from the East Coast to the West, they finally stopped in Coos Bay, Oregon, where Cheryl lived for 14 years with her daughters.
Cheryl worked hard, mostly as a single mom, raising her two daughters. As a returning student, Cheryl was the first in her family to complete college, obtaining her B.S. in Psychology in 1993. She bought her own home in Vancouver, WA and worked for Wells Fargo for 15 years.
Cheryl had many passions, including reading, crafts, her kitties, watching NASCAR, and making the holidays special. She loved her daughters and grandsons, Cutler and Duncan and created beautiful picture displays in her cozy home. As she loved photographs and working with people, Cheryl worked several years for the Olan Mills church division, traveling with the photographers and helping others get their own family portraits done. Cheryl was an avid reader and made regular visits to the library. She brought cheer to her close circle of work friends. In her later years, Cheryl grew closer to her niece Bella and enjoyed regular phone calls with her brother Glenn, both in Maine.
She loved to cook and decorate for every possible holiday, and made her and her daughters' Halloween costumes from scratch for many years. She also tirelessly supported her daughters' gymnastics talent for many years with hours of travel and volunteer work.
Cheryl is survived by her two daughters Kelly and Erin, her brother Glenn, her niece Bella, and her nephews Glenn and Danny. She was preceded in death by her sister Leontine, her former husband Wiley, and her parents. Cheryl's father, sister, and niece also battled cancer, and the family encourages you to make a contribution to the American Cancer Society in all of their honor.
