Born in Bucoda, Washington, second son of James D and Martha (Tobey) Smith, Daniel graduated from Darrington High School. He attended Washington State College for three years, and, after attaining the rank of Major in service to his country during WW II in the Army Air Corps, he graduated in accounting and business administration from the University of Washington. At the University of Washington, he was president of the business administration fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. At the outset of World War II, he married Marcia Hoag, of Hoquiam Washington. The couple celebrated 71 years of marriage last month. Following college, he worked for Frederick and Nelson department store in Seattle, Puget Sound Power and Light, and partnered with his father-in-law for a time, running Thomas Flower shop in Hoquiam, Washington. In 1969 he moved to Renton, but took a hiatus for work on the east coast between 1971 and 1975. He was proud of his work to develop the Super Sonic Transport ('''SST''?), which, unfortunately, never came into production. Dan retired from the United States Air Force reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Daniel was a life-long Mason and rose to the level of Grand Master at the Kent Washington Masonic Lodge. He was a popular scoutmaster of Troop 386 in the Burien area when his sons were involved in scouting. Upon retirement, Daniel enjoyed traveling taking trips to China Russia, and Europe in search of adventure in the wider world.
