OBITUARY

Darlene T. Born, 81 of Sun City West, Arizona passed away on September 4th, 2013. She was born September 5th, 1931 in Palco, Kansas to Darl and Avalee Deapen. Darlene had four children; one deceased, Lynn Okon (Mike Okon). She is survived by her remaining children, Mark Hinkle (Lori Hinkle), Alicia Hinkle Richard (Jerry Richard), and Julie Hinkle (Tausha Long). She was a long time resident of East Lansing Michigan, where she met the love of her life and best friend Jack D. Born. She is survived by her step-children; Robert Born (Debbie Born), Jennie Born and Judy Born Westers (Peter Westers). She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; Jesi King, Emily and Sean Okon, Erin, Christopher and Allison McInerney, Sammi Micke, Matthew, Christina and Chloe Hinkle, Rob, Kate, Marshall, and Jack Born, and Silas, Jakoba and Abigail Westers. Darlene was great-grandmother to Ryan, Cayden, Kieria, Hailee, Alana and Daren.

Darlene attended the University of Colorado where she earned a B.S. in Nursing. She also earned a Master’s Degree of Science in Sociology from Colorado State University. She began her career working with Dr. R. A. Bradley who pioneered The Bradley Method welcoming fathers into the delivery room. Darlene was an advocate for many and worked tirelessly for the migrant population’s health, Head Start program, Planned Parenthood and finished her career as Director of Program Policy for the Michigan Department of Social Services.

She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of The Scotts Club, Sun City West Chapter. Darlene loved to golf and to travel. She made several trips with the Elder Hostel in the states and abroad. During one of those trips she traveled to Ostuni Italy and taught English to school children. Darlene loved babies and volunteered as a “hugger” in the NICU at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

There will be a celebration of her life October 12, 1:00 p.m., Sun City West Foundation, 14465 R. H. Johnson Blvd. In lieu of flowers please honor her memory by making a donation to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Online donations can made online at:
