Dennis Francis McGuire, 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of August 5, 2025. Born on June 23, 1948, in San Francisco, California, Dennis grew up in Newark, New Jersey, where he developed the sharp wit and warm humor that became his trademark.
The son of two World War II veterans — his father, James Andrew McGuire, a proud U.S. Navy serviceman, and his mother, Mary E. McGuire, a dedicated switchboard operator during the war — Dennis was raised with a deep respect for service and sacrifice, values that shaped the course of his life.
A proud American, Dennis served his country honorably in the United States Army, attaining the rank of E-4. He served with the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment as a Radio Operator during the Vietnam War.
For his service, Dennis was awarded numerous military honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with “60” Device, Defense Expert Badge (M60), Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle M16), Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
Following his military service, Dennis continued to serve his community and honor his fellow veterans. He was a dedicated Patriot Guard Rider, ensuring that fallen service members received the respect they deserved, and proudly served for many years as Commander of the local VFW Hall in Jasper, Texas.
Dennis was known for his quick wit, his ability to make others laugh, and his generous spirit. He lived his life with loyalty, courage, and a steadfast dedication to his family, friends, and country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary McGuire, and his wife, Gloria Martin.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Smith-McGuire; his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Matthew Henry; grandchildren Hannah, Hunter and Heath; great-granddaughter Amelia; sisters Joan and Maureen; as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Dennis will be cremated and, at a later date, laid to rest with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery in recognition of his service to our nation.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Patriot Guard Riders in his memory.
