Dorothy Mae Gregson Mauney, lovingly known as “Dot,” passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation in Brenham, Texas, at the age of 91.
Dot was born on June 24, 1934, in Houston, Texas, to Tom George Gregson and Ola Iona Read Gregson. She was the eldest of three children born to their marriage and had six additional siblings from her parents’ previous marriages, as both had been widowed. Family was central to Dot’s life. She treasured her siblings, loved family gatherings, and took great joy in hosting reunions throughout the year. Keeping family connected and in fellowship with one another was deeply important to her.
After graduating from high school, Dot married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Max Mauney—known to all as “Pete”—on July 8, 1952. Together, they built a Christ-centered, loving marriage that spanned more than 73 years. They were inseparable companions in life. Two sons were born to their union: Dennis Craig Mauney and Ricky Edward Mauney. Dot loved her sons dearly. In September 2019, her youngest son, Ricky, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Though his loss was devastating to her, Dot was immensely proud of Ricky’s faith and his dedication to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ during his final year. Her eldest son, Dennis, was always a constant source of support and care for his parents. Dot was proud of his faithfulness, his regular church attendance with them, and his passion for horses and roping.
Dot embraced her roles as wife, mother, and grandmother with grace and devotion. She had a special gift for comforting others, often through her cooking. An exceptional cook, she made sure no one ever left her table hungry and that glasses of iced tea were always full. As the wife of a farmer and rancher, she prepared three meals a day with love. She also enjoyed sewing and made many of her boys’ western shirts, as well as her own clothing. Later, as her children grew and began families of their own, Dot worked as a Cylinder Auditor for Big Three Industries in Houston and continued her career with Air Liquide, from which she retired after 20 years of service.
Dot faithfully helped Pete on the farm while keeping their home immaculate. Together, they tended a beautiful vegetable and rose garden. She cherished her grandchildren and the close relationships she shared with them. Dot loved fishing, traveling with Pete, and spending time with close friends. In 2003, after 40 years residing on their farm in Houston, Dot and Pete retired to Brenham, Texas, where they found a church home at Country Bible Church. They were active members there for over twenty years.
Throughout her life, Dot shared a deep and abiding Christian faith with Pete. Together, they studied God’s Word and continually sought to grow in their understanding and walk with Him.
Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband of 73 years, J.M. “Pete” Mauney; her son, Dennis Craig Mauney, and wife Lynda, Daughter-in-Law, Melissa Mauney Caldwell; and her cherished grandchildren: Brian Mauney; Rebecca Mauney; Craig Mauney and wife Audra; Brenda Duebbe and husband Jason; Justin Mauney and wife Erin; and Betsy Sawyer and husband Bradley. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Tanner Mauney, Daren Duebbe, Knox Mauney, Lyla Mauney, Cooper Mauney, Pace Mauney, Spicer Mauney, and Halstyn Mauney, as well as one great-great-grandchild, Hazel Williams-Mauney.
Dot was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ricky Edward Mauney.
