Eugene L. Foutz, a devoted family man and avid outdoorsman, passed away on August 13, 2024, in Green Valley, Arizona, at the age of 90. He was born on July 4, 1934, in Millersville, Pennsylvania. Eugene, fondly known as Gene or "Eug", lived a life marked by commitment to family, service, and adventure.
Immediately after graduating from high school, Gene moved to Chicago, Illinois, to attend DeVry Technical Institute, where he honed his technical skills and laid the foundation for a lifelong career. His journey was defined not only by his professional pursuits, but also by his dedication to serve his country. Gene was proud to have served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility.
On October 23,1955, Gene married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Funk. Two weeks later, he left home for his Navy enlistment! Gene and Phyllis had three children and were married nearly 69 years at the time of his passing.
Gene's love for the great outdoors was reflected in the many weekends spent camping and hiking with his family. In the early years, they explored the mountains of Pennsylvania and the scenic east coast. In 1966, seeking new adventures, Gene moved his family to Scottsdale, Arizona, where they embraced the beauty of the Southwest. An enthusiast of off-road vehicles of any kind, he found great joy in traversing the stunning Utah landscapes, particularly around Cedar City. His passion for nature and exploration became an integral part of family life, creating cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of his loved ones.
While living in Scottsdale, Gene spent 50 years serving in the Los Arcos United Methodist Church family. Over the years, he filled many roles and spent countless hours working on church projects whenever he was asked to serve. Gene met many lifelong friends through his Los Arcos UMC association and the church family meant the world to him.
Gene and Phyllis also enjoyed travelling the globe with a group of special friends. Their excursions ranged from river cruises on the Mississippi to watching volcanos in Costa Rica! They traveled Europe from Amsterdam to Russia, always reveling in the sights they had seen and the friends they so enjoyed.
Gene leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. He is survived by the love of his life, Phyllis; his daughter, Cindy (Al); sons, Sid and Rod (Vicky); grandchildren Megan, Jennifer, Lynda, Frank (Jennifer) and Matthew (Kaleena); and great-grandson, Zane, as well as many additional extended family and friends. Each member of his family carries forth the values he instilled in them—courage, compassion, and a deep appreciation of life.
As we remember Eugene L. Foutz, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by adventure, family dedication, and unwavering commitment. His spirit will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service for Gene will be held at the United Methodist Church of Green Valley, AZ on November 2, 2024 at 1:00pm
