Fred Williams Costner III, 75, passed away on June 4, 2025 at Medical City Denton Hospital in Denton, Texas. His last place of residency was 3464 Tuscan Hills Circle, Denton, Texas 76210. He is resting in peace in God’s loving hands. Fred was born in Atlanta, GA, on August 22, 1949 to the late Faye Mitchum and Fred Williams Costner, Jr. After graduation from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree, Fred began his career in the food industry, which included wholesale and marketing, while also serving as a Captain in the Army National Guard. His hobbies were hiking, camping, and building items from wood in his self-made home shop. In the years after retirement Fred’s passion was evangelizing and being one of the teachers in the Men’s Bible Studies at Calvary Church in Charlotte, NC, where he was a member.
Fred was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Joel McWhorter.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Mauldin Hoyt Costner; sister, Rebecca Wade McWhorter (Becky) Douglasville, GA; son, Fred Williams Costner IV, (Bill), Alabaster, AL; and grandson, Gray Thomas Costner, Palm Harbor, FL; step-grandson, Payton Hoyt (Emily Gambrel), step-great-granddaughter, Olivia Rose Hoyt (1 yr old); step-granddaughter, Legacee Hoyt Morgan (Mike Morgan).
Fred chose to be cremated with no memorial service.
