Bishop, Geneva Katherine
Rancho Bernardo
Geneva passed peacefully at her home in Rancho Bernardo, August 15, 2013, at the
age of 94. Her family were at her side.
She was born in Okfuskee, Oklahoma on February 4, 1919, and was raised in Maud,
Oklahoma. She graduated from Oklahoma A&M, and moved to San Diego in 1941, with
her first husband, Thomas Barkett with whom she had three sons. She worked as a
chemist in the dairy industry for 27 years. After retirement, she and her second husband
David Bishop owned an insurance brokerage. She was predeceased by her husband,
David, and her son, Stanley Barkett. She is survived by her sons, Ron (Elizabeth)
Barkett, Nick (Katie) Barkett, and stepsons Stephen (Lynne) Bishop, and Dennis
Bishop. She has 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She and David were members of the Bernardo Heights Country Club for many years
where she worked on her golf game. When golf became too difficult due to her age,
she honed her bridge playing skills, which were formidable and played bridge with her
good friends until one week before passing.
Geneva was a beautiful woman with a strong personality that served her well as she
raised her three sons alone. She had a wonderful sense of humor that was present until
the end. When asked if she would prefer burial or cremation when the time came, she
replied “surprise me”. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. No memorial services are
planned.
