George Laroy Oakes

George Laroy Oakes, 84, of San Dimas, California, left us peacefully to be with God on October 21. A beloved father and grandfather, George, or “Roy”, will always be remembered for being a loving and giving father and grandfather whose priority was clearly his family.

Roy was born on October 10, 1940, in Many, Louisiana. He moved to Texas early in his childhood where his roots were firmly planted. He always referred to Houston, Texas as his hometown. Professional opportunities took him to Southern California in the early 1980’s.

Roy was proud of his US Air Force service at Vandenberg AFB in California where he served as a Basic Airman after high school. He was also proud of his 28 years of service at Boeing Corporation as a Manufacturing Estimator. He was most proud of his children, grandchildren, and their personal and professional accomplishments.

Two topics Roy was passionate about were education and football. He always prioritized education and instilled that priority with his children and grandchildren. It brought joy to him to talk about the importance of education and the opportunities it can provide.

If you knew Roy, you knew not to call or visit him on football Sundays. An avid follower of his Houston football teams, he was not to be disturbed during their games and would Monday morning quarterback their results and areas of improvement. He was one of a very few who would record all the NFL games each week and watch them the week after. Passionate may be an understatement.

Roy is survived by his brother, Paul Edward Oakes, son, John Edward Oakes, daughter, Kimberly Kay Hoskins, lifelong friend and mother of his children, Connie Lee Oakes, and four grandchildren. Although Roy is no longer with us, his love, priorities, and passions will always be remembered.

A service in Roy’s memory will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California on December 9. Please contact the family for exact details of the service. Roy wanted donations in his name to be made In lieu of flowers to a charity in support of one of his passions, Scholarship America.
