June 24, 1938 - December 20, 2015

George Michael Pogojeff, beloved father, brother, husband, uncle, grandfather and devoted friend, passed peacefully into eternity, embraced by the love of his family around him, on Sunday, December 20, 2015. He was 77.

George, the second of two children, was born on June 24,1938 to Nadja and Michael Pogojeff, of San Francisco; a city that he dearly loved. Having spent his youth growing up there, he never got too far away from it, either, enjoying his final years in Vallejo. After high school, George went on to become an alumni of UC Berkeley before heading into the medical field. He enjoyed a 45-year, successful career in healthcare working as a medical technologist; 'saving lives', he would say with a smile. He was always well-liked by his colleagues, and he formed many lasting friendships through his work. It was during his med. tech. training that George met his first wife, Anne Cassidy, with whom he had three children.

George had a sharp mind for business, and enjoyed owning a number of different investment and vacation properties throughout his life. Always the 'tinkerer', he was happy to be engaged in some sort of 'fix it' project around his own home or another, if he was not outside in his words,'doing the goddess's work' of gardening. For some years, his love for the outdoors was also filled with riding his bike and walking one of his two cherished pets, Sparky, then Maggie. Later,George became a rowing group regular. His quick wit and acquiescing charm won him some very dear friends there as well.

An active intellect, George read Time magazine and The Economist, among others, avidly. Astounded that some adults in society had yet to receive the gift of learning to read, he devoted several years as a volunteer tutor through an adult literacy program; work which he found incredibly rewarding. George also followed political and economic commentary closely. Like his father before him, he liked nothing more than to be indulged in a lively philosophical debate! George found the time, too, to categorize and catalogue volumes and volumes of stamps as a careful collector. Ever the coupon clipper and bargain hunter, he never met a garage sale that he didn't like!

George is survived by his wife, Joyce; sister, Vera Maidenburg (Ben); children, Michael (Darlene), Caryn St. Germain, and Allyson Pogojeff; their mother, Anne Cassidy; grandchildren,Kimi and Kyle Pogojeff; niece, Marla Maidenburg and nephew, Mark Maidenburg (Kim) and kids; boyhood friend John Panages (Dee); many, many other cherished friends and his beloved Boxer, Maggie.

No services will be held at this time as the family prefers to memorialize George privately. The family would appreciate donations in memory of George Pogojeff to Doctors without Borders by visiting http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/support-us/other-ways-give/donate-mail.

Cremation and arrangements entrusted to the direction and care of SMART Cremation. (509) 220-8891; #2008
