JACOB A. SIGL
April 4, 1927 – October 24, 2016
Jacob (Jake) A. Sigl, 89, of Redmond, WA, peacefully passed away in the loving care of his family at home on October 24, 2016. Born April 4, 1927 in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Jacob B. Sigl and Anna Sigl. He moved with his parents to Brooklyn, NY, in 1934 and attended high school until December of 1944 when at the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was assigned to the USN Seabee Special 34th Battalion stationed in Guam in the Mariana island chain where he served supporting Navy, Marine and Air Force operations in the WWII Pacific theatre campaign until July, 1946 when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Seamen First Class. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and received Letter of Commendation. Jake was always proud of his military service to our country and remained active in veterans groups and affairs throughout his entire life.
Jacob is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Olga Anne Sigl; son John and wife Cindy and grandsons Scott and Brian of Cranford, NJ; son Stephen and wife Vicki and grandsons Jake and Zachary of San Ramon, CA; son Michael and wife Jennifer and granddaughters Grace and Jane of Kirkland, WA; son Edward and wife Mary Beth Gray and grandsons Wesley and William and granddaughter Caroline of Lewisburg, PA.
After returning home from his WWII service, Jake joined his father at Newark Die Company as an Apprentice Tool and Die Maker. Jake developed his craft and became a highly skilled tool and die maker for his entire 47-year career until his retirement from Newark Die Company and Pacer Tool in 1993. He first met his future wife Olga through a mutual friend at a Ukrainian dance in Manhattan and shortly following they were married in 1954. In 1959 Jacob and Olga moved their family to Union, NJ where they raised their four boys. Following their retirements, Jacob and Olga moved to Redmond, WA in 2003, where they enjoyed life making new friends and traveling and more than anything spending time with family and friends.
Jake was always a kind and giving person. He loved studying history, listening to classical music, fishing with his father and sons, and Major League Baseball. One of his most cherished memories was attending Lou Gehrig Day at Yankee Stadium with his father in 1939 at the age of 12. A memorial service and reception celebrating Jacob's life and faith is planned at Saint Jude Catholic Church in Redmond, WA, on Saturday, November 12, at 11am.
