James Alex Okonek Jr., “Jim”, passed away on February 20, 2026, in Olympia, Washington. He spent nearly his entire life in Shelton, where he was born on September 5, 1951.
The son of James Alex Okonek Sr. and Augusta “Babe” Okonek (Niemann), both deceased, Jim spent a lot of his young life in nearby Grapeview on his grandparents’ farm on Okonek Road. Hilda and Al Okonek played a meaningful role in his early life, and farm life helped shape the steady, capable man he became.
Jim attended the University of Washington, earning his degree in forestry, a field that reflected both his sharp mind and his deep connection to the land. He began his career with Simpson Timber Company and later worked for the Thurston County Assessor’s Office, where he served faithfully for many years.
In 1978, Jim built a beautiful log home on ten acres west of Shelton with his then-wife, Terri Freiss (Campbell). With skill, patience, and vision, he created the home where he would raise his children and enjoy his favorite moments. The home became the heart of family life and remained one of his proudest accomplishments.
In 1986, Jim married his beloved wife, Sandy Okonek (Baskin), a longtime teacher at Pioneer Elementary in Shelton. Together they built a life rooted in family and community, watching their children and grandchildren grow and flourish together. This year would have been their 40th wedding anniversary.
Jim was the proud father of Melissa Okonek, Luann Myers, Amanda Okonek (Shane Abbott and children Maya and Stellan) and Alex Okonek (Katie Lowery and baby Ada). He absolutely adored watching his grandchildren grow. Being “Grandpa” was one of the great joys of his life, as were his many four-legged family members and “grandogs”.
He is also survived by his sister, Doralyn LeGarde (Lee LeGarde ), and their son, Tom.
Jim loved fishing, boating, woodworking, spending time outdoors and cheering on the Seahawks. Camping and fishing trips with his children became cherished traditions and lasting memories. He was thoughtful, intelligent, witty and deeply devoted to those he loved.
Per Jim’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A small gathering of immediate family will be held at the home he loved. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association if you wish.
Jim leaves behind a great legacy in the family he built, the home he created, and the children and grandchildren who carry his love forward. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
