Janet Sprouse Budge, 87, passed away April 1, 2024, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla California. She was an active member of the LDS church. She was born to LaVon Sprouse and Norma Patterson on September 7,1936 in Logan Utah. She grew up on a farm in Garden City, Utah. She was the eldest child of 3, followed by her brother Larry Sprouse and then her sister Linda (Sprouse) Schmidt. Janet was known for being an accomplished musician, a book lover, and having a wealth of knowledge on many things. As children Janet and Larry could always be found reading, which frustrated their younger sister Linda who wanted to play. At a young age Janet first showed her musical talents on the piano where she surpassed the knowledge of the local teachers in Paris and Montpelier Idaho. She attended Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho where through music she met her high school sweetheart Lynn Budge. He played the trumpet while Janet accompanied him on the piano for many competitions.
Janet’s love of learning and music led her to the University of Utah where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Minor in Music. Janet and Lynn were married in the Salt Lake Temple in the Spring of 1960. Lynn fell ill of cancer and passed away in 1961. She then spent the next 9 years teaching English in Utah, Turkey, England, Colorado, Hawaii, and Nevada. While she was in Utah, she also played the violin for the Utah Symphony Orchestra for 2 years. While teaching in England Janet met Patrick Shelley. A few years later they were married.
Janet then decided to continue her education and completed a Master’s at the University of Oregon in Library and Information Science. Then Patrick and Janet relocated to Virgina where in 1978 they adopted 2 children from Costa Rica, Maria, and Joseph. In 1979 the new family of 4 moved to San Diego, California. Janet then began her illustrious career as a Librarian for over 40 years sharing her wealth of knowledge with all who entered her library. She continued her love for the arts by exposing groups of children to their first Symphonies and Opera’s.
Upon retiring Janet continued to play the organ for the LDS church, read many more books, saw more Opera’s and Symphonies with friends and family. In the last few years her favorite outings were going to the movies and lunch with friends and family.
Janet is survived by her sister Linda Schmidt; children, Maria Johnson, and Joseph Shelley; grandchildren Craig, Jakob, Nicholas, Jonas and Genevieve.
There will be a Celebration of Life on May 11, 2024 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (12701 Torrey Bluff Drive, San Diego, CA 92130).
The burial will be in Paris Idaho, next to Lynn Budge on August 3rd, 2024.
