OBITUARY
Jeanne B. Baly
Born: April 4, 1927
Died: August 1, 2018
Raised in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, the youngest of six children, three brothers and two sisters.
After moving to Chicago when she was nineteen, she attended Moody Bible Institute for two years.
Over the next 30 years Jeanne dedicated her life to her family and work with the U. S. Postal Service from which she retired as a branch manager after 20 years of dedicated service, and working mostly nights so she could be home during the day for her family.
During those same years, Jeanne spent endless time spearheading the creation of LifeSpan, a center for victims of domestic violence that provided resources and support, and a 24 hour hot line. LifeSpan became an officially recognized center in 1978, when Jeanne became its first Executive Director and served on its board until 1982. LifeSpan has since grown into a multi-faceted organization and is recognized statewide (Illinois) for its many programs related to helping victims of domestic violence.
Jeanne was active in her church and community in a variety of ways, including Evangelical & Ecumenical Women's Caucus {EEWC}, both at the national level and locally in the Chicago area. The organization would later become known as Christian Feminism {CFT}, not only carrying on the work and purposes of EEWC, but broadening its vision as it pursues social justice and advocates for full equality of women and men and LGBTQ people in both church and society.
Jeanne graduated from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago with a BA in 1977, and had several hours toward her M.A.
Her legacy is one that is best stated by a favorite of hers whom she often talked about and quoted, Billy Graham. "The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is a legacy of character and faith."
Surviving Jeanne are her life partner of 41 years, Judy Jahnke; her four children, Valerie Baly Arnesen, Pamela Tolemy, Steven Baly (Kristen), and Becky O'Connor (Mike); 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; two step children, Scott Jahnke, Cara Jahnke Warford (Ron); five step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
