Joe Wayne
Thomas
July 30, 1939 – April 10, 2026
Joe Wayne Thomas, 86, known affectionately to most as "Honey," entered his eternal rest on April 10, 2026. Born on July 30, 1939, in Olney, Illinois, Joe was the 9th of 14 children born to Evert Victor and Emma Jane Thomas. He led a life marked by dedication, kindness, wit and an unyielding spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served his country as an Aircraft Control & Warning Operator with honor before channeling his determination and hard work into a variety of careers. Early on, he and his brother, Lee, owned a service station and later Thomas Boarding Kennels. Most of his career was spent as a truck driver, initially the proud owner of Thomas Trucking Service and later driving commercially. The final steppingstone in his career before retirement was the job he most enjoyed, as a driver for O’Reilly Auto Parts. He considered it the perfect job; he was a man who simply didn’t meet strangers. His humor sparkled brightly in every conversation.
Joe was a passionate and incredible gardener. Until his health kept him away this last year, if the sun was out, you would find him in his gardens. He beamed with pride as he admired the fruits of his labor and found much happiness in sharing his wealth of knowledge with the younger generation. It was a joyous sight these last few months to see the light in his eyes and smile on his face as he realized his accomplishment of a job well done to those he taught, and knowledge his legacy would carry on. When he wasn’t out tending his gardens, you could find him cozy in his recliner, channel surfing to find just about any western he could tune into. Most likely, it was on a rerun of “Gunsmoke”.
At the core of Joe’s life was his beloved family. Lynn, his loving wife of sixty-four years, stood by his side through all of life’s moments. Together, they raised four children who carry forward Joe’s legacy of love and strength: Toddy Thomas (Trina), Emma Franklin (Keith), Victor Thomas (Christine), and Christine “Foxy” Durham (Lorne). Joe’s role as a grandfather was equally treasured, with grandchildren Levi (Lauren), Sterling, Megan, Tara, Price, Bailey (Catrin), Parker, Logan (Emily) and Emma filling his heart with pride and joy. This love extended into the next generation with great-grandchildren Tristan, Nicholas, Mya, Darryn, Mckinsey, Livy, Lucy, Patrick, Trae, and Jane, who brought him immeasurable delight.
Family ties extended warmly to his surviving siblings as well: Joy Pevateaux (Louis), Dale Thomas, Jimmy Thomas, and Marie Bullock.
Joe’s final moments were graced by the presence of his loving wife and children, a testament to the deep bonds he nurtured throughout his life. His departure leaves a profound void, yet the memories of his heartening smile, his spirited stories, and the strength of his character will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. In celebrating the life of Joe Thomas, we remember a man who lived with unwavering compassion and a spirited love for life, forever known as “Honey” to those who loved him most. His story is a lasting reminder of the power of kindness, and the enduring impact one life can have on so many.
A Celebration of Life for Joe will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 1:00pm at the Thomas home, 1741 Community Center Road, Montgomery, Texas 77356.
