Julia Maureen Young Calvillo

After a courageous 13-year battle with metastatic breast cancer, Julia Maureen Young Calvillo passed away on January 24, 2025, at the age of of 65.  Born in Bakersfield, California to John and Sally Young as the fourth of their six children, Julia's life was marked by her boundless kindness, beauty and strength.  

            A proud graduate of Highland High School, Class of 1978, Julia lived a life full of rich experiences and service, working in a wide variety of roles exemplifying her flexibility and hard work.  From modeling and reception work  to being a pizza maker, daycare owner, usher and even a Lyft driver, Julia embraced every opportunity with warmth and dedication.  She was also an avid reader, animal lover, KUZZ listener, devoted companion at her husband Gary's local music engagements, and the mother of strong women.  Julia was a constant source of encouragement and love, and her kindness, humor and nurturing spirit touched the hearts of all who knew her.

           Julia leaves behind her beloved husband, Gary Calvillo, her children, Grace Calvillo, Sara (Jonathan) Corral, Alyson (Ben) Gaskins, stepdaughter Christy (Benn) Beutler, two stepsons, and an ever-growing family including 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her siblings, Sharon (Dale) McBride, Mary Warren, Rick ( Tammy) Young, John (Penny) Young, and James (Ana) Young, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Julia was preceded in death by her loving parents.

          The family would like to acknowledge and thank you Dr. Vinh-Linh Nguyen for his kindness and diligence in caring for Julia for thirteen years, the incredible Hoffmann Hospice staff, as well as her granddaughter, Kylee Calvillo, who kept vigil near her grandma throughout the final days. A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady Of  Perpetual Help Church on March 6, 2025 at 10A.M. to celebrate Julia's tenacious spirit and remarkable life.
