Laverne Manderscheid

Laverne (Vance) Manderscheid has lost her courageous four year battle with cancer on this 1st day of June, 2016. Laverne was born in Nelson, BC Canada on May 13, 1934 to Lavern (Vern) Vance and Edna Mae (Teddy) Vance (nee Allen) and spent most of her younger years there, graduating from grade 12 in 1953. She then attended Holy Names College in Spokane, Wa, where she received her Medical Secretary Certificate. While attending college, she met her husband-to-be on a blind date. She and Oly (Elden) Manderscheid were married in Nelson on June 8th, 1956. After a short time in Spokane, they moved to Seattle where between 1957 and 1962 she gave birth to their three children and was the consummate wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, biking and the many neighborhood social functions.
In 1974 they moved back to Spokane to a farm where Laverne was transformed from a big city girl to a farm girl, starting their small herd of cattle by bottle feeding two starter calves. She thrived in this roll and lovingly cared for her kids, cattle, chickens, a horse, 2 dogs and a cat. She also discovered she had a great talent for art, joining an art class, and in a short time was instructing others on how to do oil painting.
Laverne and Oly moved back to Seattle in 1981 where she continued her art career. When she was 50 years of age, she returned to school and earned her certificate as a Medical Assistant, then worked for various doctors in the North Seattle area for 12 years until she retired to her and Oly's condo in Bellingham, Wa in 1997. There she found an additional hobby, golf.
After two Northwest winters they sold their condo and headed south to the Palm Springs, Ca area, buying a home on the golf course in Tri Palm Estates in Thousand Palms. There she continued her art career and was a member of the Spa City Paletters winning many ribbons over the years, including the "Peoples Choice" award. Laverne pursued this passion for art until cancer took her stamina and desire the last year. She belonged to the Tri Palm Ladies Par Three Golf Club, the Cactus Cats Golf Club and enjoyed the other social functions and activities in the park. Laverne and Oly were "Snowbirds", spending their summers in the Northwest where she could satisfy her need for family interaction, while playing golf, and fishing for the "big one" on the Snake River.
Laverne was a great person, and will be remembered for her extreme love for her family, her smile, and her gracious attitude and respect towards all those that she met.
Laverne is survived by her husband of 60 years, Oly Manderscheid, her son James Manderscheid (Karen) of Pasco, Wa, and daughters Rae Ann Pardo (Richard), Gig Harbor, Wa and Lori Manderscheid of West Richland, Wa, plus 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Robert Vance (Sharon), Victoria BC and sisters Margret Rosling (Don) and Judy Stewart, of Vancouver, BC, Corinne Scheldrup (Don), Nelson, BC, and Mary McMurray (Ron), Surrey, BC.
Per her request, she will be cremated and her ashes spread at a location near where her fathers were placed. A private celebration of her life will be held at that time with family and friends. No date has been set.
