Lena Mae Caldwell Shaw passed away very peacefully on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the age of 92. Lena was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on August 3, 1924 and spent her childhood in Weston, Missouri. She was the daughter of Gertrude and William Caldwell, and was the older sister of William Franklin Caldwell. Lena met her husband, Gerald Joseph Shaw, in Kansas City, Mo, and they were married on April 26, 1949. They lived in Lamar, Missouri until 1963, at which time they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. Lena moved to Portland, Oregon in 1986 to be nearby as her grandchildren grew up.
Lena was predeceased by her husband Jerry in 1969, and by her son William Harte Shaw in 2012. Four daughters remain to mourn her loss: Elaine Taylor (and husband Ron) of Zephyrhills, Florida; Mary Doede (and husband Dan) of Portland, Oregon; Janine Shaw (and husband Barry Scholes) of Huntington, WV; and Ann Shaw of Houston, Texas. Lena was devoted to her grandchildren Matt Lancaster of Denver, Colorado; Kate Lancaster of Houston, Texas; and Aria Doede of Portland, Oregon. She was a member of St. John Berchmans Catholic Church in Shreveport, and St. John Fisher in Portland.
Lena had a gentle soul, and loved to laugh. She was a great cook, and loved nothing better than a large family dinner. She loved flower gardening, crossword puzzles, antiquing, bowling, fishing, reading a good mystery, and long drives enjoying nature and beautiful homes. She was proud of her good work as mother of "five wonderful kids" and also of her careers, from executive secretary in Kansas City in the1940's to realtor in Shreveport. While she enjoyed rooting for her Portland Trailblazers on TV, she much preferred to "sit and visit" over a cup of coffee and something good to eat—or better yet a fierce and friendly game of cards. She was beloved by her family and will live forever in their hearts and memories.
The family gratefully thanks the Compassionate Care Home in Portland for their loving care over the last two years. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
