LYNN MARIE (HINTZ) CHARTIER

July 3, 1935 – November 8, 2025

Lynn Marie (Hintz) Chartier passed peacefully on November 8, 2025, in Menifee, California, at the age of 90. Lynn was a devoted and loving wife, and a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her deep, unwavering faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was evident to all who knew her.

Lynn was truly a country girl at heart. Some of her earliest memories were formed along the Oconto River in Gillette, Wisconsin, in the home built by her grandfather, Robert Hintz, who immigrated from Germany with his wife, Martha (Darrow) Hintz. Robert went on to help found the nearby Town of Hintz, serve as municipal judge, and represent his community in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Both Lynn’s maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated from Germany in 1873. The Hintz family lineage is recorded in The Descendants of Gottfried & Wilhelmine Griepp & Their Hintz & Rathke Kinships by Frank R. Griepp.

As a young girl, Lynn enjoyed swimming and fishing with her older brothers, Sonny (Walter) and Don, along the red banks of the Oconto River. There was a creek that ran through their land, both she and her cousin especially enjoyed playing in as young girls. They also had fun gathering wild berries and picking flowers during the spring and summer months. Life at the Hintz home revolved around their wood-burning stove and the chores of chopping wood, tending to the chickens, pets, and caring for the garden.

Lynn attended a one-room country schoolhouse with multiple grade levels—an experience quite different from her later life in the “big city” of Green Bay after her family moved. She went on to attend Washington Junior High School and graduated from East High School. Lynn had a gifted singing voice and was encouraged by a teacher to join the school choir. She taught herself piano, enjoyed sketching and painting, and became known for her exceptional cooking and baking—especially her coveted apple pies with their flaky crusts. Her love of reading was passed on to her children from an early age. She was seldom seen without an apple in hand when reading an interesting novel.

After graduating, Lynn worked as a switchboard operator. Her first date with her future husband and sweetheart, Derald, was at the original Kroll’s Diner in Green Bay, famous for its butter burgers. They married in August of 1959 at First Assembly of God Church in Green Bay and flew out west to California on Flying Tigers, Derald's employer at the time. They purchased their first home in Whittier, California in 1960, where they worked hard to build a life for their future family. They raised three active children—balancing home, church, school, work, sports, and countless family camping trips. Derald and Lynn were dedicated members of First Family Church (formerly First Assembly of God) in Whittier for more than 30 years.

In retirement, they enjoyed cruising and road trips to visit family. Their favorite camping memories were at Hume Lake in the beautiful Sequoia National Forest. They settled in the active lake community of Canyon Lake, California, where Derald currently resides.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Derald; their three children, Diane (Mike) Gurr, Doug Chartier, and Bruce (Kimberly) Chartier; her grandchildren Kelly (Scott) Lawson, Amy Gurr, Holly-Lynn Chartier, Chloe (Connor) Day, Chase Chartier, Charlie Chartier, and Caleb Chartier; and two great-grandchildren, Avery Lawson and Hannah Lawson. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Linda Hintz, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Laura Hintz; her brothers Kenneth, Walter, Donald, and James; her sister in law, Ethel Hintz; her niece, Dana Jennrich and many cherished aunts, uncles and cousins.Lynn will be remembered for her loving heart, steadfast faith, love for music, and her heart to serve others. A family gathering will be planned at a later date.
