Martha (Sue) McBryde Monroe
May 24, 1945 – September 22, 2025
Martha (Sue) McBryde Monroe, 80, of Rio Vista, California, passed away at home on Monday, September 22, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Born on May 24, 1945, in Sanford, North Carolina, she was the eldest of four daughters of Charles and Lois McBryde.
Martha is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, The Rev. Douglas James Monroe, their children, Perry Judson Monroe (Lisa) of Mercer Island, Washington, Maddock McBryde Monroe (Patricia) of Dublin, California, Mary Allison Monroe of Campbell, California and her beloved grandchildren, Samantha Patricia Monroe, Emma McBryde Monroe, Gavin James Monroe, Wren Gray Monroe, and Grace Elaine Monroe.
She is also survived by her sisters Jane Mann (Tom) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Frances Mann (Ed) of Greenville, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Sarah Spital (Bruce) of Smithfield, Virginia.
Martha had a gift for making every place she lived feel like home. As the wife of a United Methodist minister, she moved often, yet she always created warmth and welcome wherever she went. She was a wonderful pastor’s wife, offering steady support to her husband and kindness to every congregation they served.
For over 25 years, Martha worked in the banking industry where she was admired, as a bank officer, for her professionalism and dedication. Beyond her career, she was best known for her love of cooking and entertaining. Her kitchen was the heart of the home, where she delighted family and friends with meals that nourished both body and soul. In quiet moments, she enjoyed watching old westerns and cooking shows – simple joys that reflected her love of both tradition and creativity.
Above all, Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She will be remembered for her warmth, grace, compassion, and for the way she touched the lives of everyone who knew her. A service celebrating her life will be Saturday, October 25th at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception, held at the Napa Methodist Church, 625 Randolph Street, Napa, CA 94559.
