Mary Anne Smith

Mary Anne Carroll Smith of Round Rock, TX was born on September 12, 1947, in Gatesville, Texas to Travis Douglas Carroll and Dorothy Wayne Carroll.  Mary Anne passed away peacefully during her sleep in the early morning hours on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Port Aransas, TX.   Mary Anne loved the beach. She spent her final moments in a place she loved, on vacation with family and friends.

During her life, Mary Anne lived in numerous locations including Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Illinois.  She graduated high school from Arlington Heights in Fort Worth, TX in 1966.  She attended Texas Tech University, graduating with a journalism degree in 1970.  Following graduation from Texas Tech, she took a job in Houston in the banking industry where she had a successful career. When her first child was born, she made the decision to give up her working career to be a stay-at-home Mom – a job she took very seriously.

Mary Anne loved her family (grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins), and she especially loved being a wife and a Mom.  She felt her job as a Mom was to prepare her children to be successful in life as productive citizens.  She made certain the children took their education seriously and helped them adjust whenever they moved to a new school.  She was a stabilizing influence throughout their lives. She was extremely proud of her children as adults. She felt her job as a wife was to be an equal partner in all things.

Mary Anne was an interesting person and loved keeping up with current events and political news.  Additionally, she was an excellent conversationalist on almost any subject.  She was a good listener and would strike up conversations with people around her at restaurants, sporting events, or in line at the grocery store.  She had a gift that few have because she was genuinely interested to learn about those she met. After a fifteen-minute conversation, it was not unusual for her to know someone’s life story, and she could garner that information without being intrusive or obvious.

Mary Anne adored her grandchildren.  She loved to spoil them and enjoyed their company.  During the last few years of her life, she loved the family gatherings at the beach.  One of the things she did on these trips was to take all the grandkids to the local candy store and let them buy a sack full of candy.

Mary Anne is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bill Smith; her son Thad (Kristie) Smith of Hemphill, TX; son Jason (Dawn) Smith of Georgetown, TX; daughter Shannon (Isaac) Kincaid of Grayslake, IL; grandson Conner (Shannon) Smith; grandson Colter Vick; granddaughter Sarah Vick; grandson Travis Smith; grandson Case Smith; grandson A.J. Smith; granddaughter Adrianna Kincaid; grandson Julian Kincaid; great-grandchildren Norah and Charlie Smith; brother Joey (Beverly) Carroll of Dallas, TX; sister-in-law JoAnn Carroll; brother-in-law Dennis Vazzi and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents Travis and Dorothy Carroll, sister Nelva Carroll, brother Von Carroll, and sister Deborah Carroll Vazzi.

And last but not least, she was sensitive about the spelling of her name. When asked, she always replied “Mary Anne with an ‘E’.”
