Obituary

Mary Hannigan Valdes passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on January 1, 1936, to Thomas and Mary (Groft) Hannigan, Mary lived a full and meaningful life centered around faith and family. A devoted Catholic, her faith was a guiding force throughout her life and a source of strength and comfort.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 34 years, Henry D. Valdes, as well as her parents and her brothers, Thomas Hannigan, Jr., Richard Hannigan and her sisters-in-law Katie Hannigan and Anne Hannigan.

She is survived by her sister, Patricia Hannigan; her brother, Michael Hannigan; and her brother-in-law and his wife, Christian and Phyllis Diaz de Valdes (AZ). She leaves behind her four children: Gregory DeValdes (VA), Mark Valdes (MS), Wayne Valdes (FL), and Pamela Valdes McCarthy (FL), along with her daughters-in-law Sue DeValdes (VA), Cathy Valdes (MS), and Marina Valdes (FL).

Mary was a proud and loving mother to her sons and daughter, grandmother to Shannon Cini and her husband Matt (VA), Michael Valdes and his wife Marlo (SC), John DeValdes (DC), Elizabeth Valdes (MS), Joey DeValdes (VA), Kayleigh McCarthy (OH), Alexandra Valdes (AUSTRALIA), Meghan McCarthy Condrich and her husband Luke (OH), and Patrick Valdes (FL). Great-grandmother to Kendall and Carson Cini (VA), Rae Valdes and Maddie Valdes (SC). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary graduated from York Catholic High School and York Junior College and later attended Penn State University, where she met the love of her life, Henry. Together, they built a life that took them across the world, living here in the United States, Chile, Canada, and Colombia while raising their family.

Mary found great joy in life’s simple pleasures—spending time with her family, taking long (often vigorous) walks, reading, and participating in her book club. She also loved playing bridge, a game she truly excelled at and enjoyed deeply. Above all, Mary will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her strong faith, and the warmth and love she shared so freely with those around her.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date in York, Pennsylvania.
