Michael John Kraus

Michael John Kraus, born February 4, 1947, passed away on March 13, 2026, in College Station, Texas. He is remembered with deep respect and admiration for a life marked by dedication, bravery, and unwavering love for his family and country.

Mike was a proud graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, class of 1965. His early years were shaped by a spirited blend of city life and a profound affection for the country. Known for his love of hunting, fishing, and aiding at his father-in-law’s farm, Mike always said he was born to wear blue jeans—a simple declaration that perfectly captured his down-to-earth spirit and authentic character.

His sense of duty extended beyond the home. Mike served with honor as a Gunners Mate, 2nd Class E5 at PBR Mobile Base One I Corps during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. His experience building and running race cars at Fort Wayne Motor Speedway translated into significant innovations on the River Patrol boats’ engines, enhancing their speed and power. His skill and ingenuity did not go unnoticed; a General recognized his talents, leading to Mike training personnel at various bases throughout Vietnam to implement these critical improvements. His courage and commitment in service saved lives and earned him lifelong pride in his contributions to his country.

Following his military service, Mike continued to serve his community through his career. He worked at the International Harvester Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana, before dedicating six years as a Sergeant for the Indiana Department of Corrections Fort Wayne Work Release Program. For two decades, he fulfilled the role of Correctional Officer at the State of Texas Department of Corrections, stationed at the O.L. Luther Unit in Navasota, Texas. Throughout his professional journey, his unwavering sense of integrity and dependability stood as the hallmarks of his work ethic.

Mike’s personality left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Unforgettable, dependable, and vibrant, he brought joy and laughter into every room. His quick wit and great sense of humor made him a cherished companion, while his loyalty and kindness defined him as a true friend. More importantly, he was a devoted family man—loving husband to Carolyn Kraus and a father whose greatest joy was guiding and teaching his daughter Susanne many essential life skills, from changing tires to persevering through life’s challenges.

He took particular delight in the simple pleasures of home life, where his humor made even the most ordinary moments memorable—such as the humorous challenge of removing a family of skunks that had taken residence beneath the house. These anecdotes dwell as warm memories among those who loved him.

Mike was proud of standing up against injustice. He was known to confront bullies and wrongdoers openly, a man whose word was his bond and who found true fulfillment in helping others when they were in need. His courage was matched only by his gentleness with his family and the depth of his love.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Susanne Kraus; his parents, Clifford and Mary June Kraus; his father-in-law, Basil Timbrook; and sisters-in-law Delores Bany and Patricia Hartnup. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carolyn Kraus; mother-in-law Marybelle Lee Timbrook; sister Mary Jo Warner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Clay Warner, Marilyn and Mark Leon, Michael and Riki Timbrook, as well as Gary and Jean Timbrook.

Michael John Kraus’s legacy is one of steadfast devotion—to his family, to his country, and to a life lived with honor and joy. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
