Norman Wetherbee Buck

Norman W. Buck, age 87, passed away June 22, 2018. He was Born on August 8,1930 to Howard G. Buck and Hilda R (Wetherbee) Buck in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was proceeded in death by his parents. He earned his Eagle Scout Award at age 16 and graduated from Franklin High School (Cedar Rapids) in June of 1948. He attended Coe Collage for one year before moving to Chicago, IL to enroll at the American Academy of Art. In October 1952 he was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in October 1954 and met his wife Hildred Starks. In January 1955, he enrolled at the University of Iowa and married Hidred in June of that year. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Journalism and rank of 2nd Lieutenant with a Distinguished Military Service Award from the ROTC program in August of 1957. Upon graduation they moved to Chicago where he worked for various art studios, ad agencies, and freelanced in advertising. He started his own ad agency (Norman W. Buck Inc.) in 1961 doing commercial graphic arts, voiceovers, and on camera work. They moved to Riverwoods, IL in 1962 where he was an active member of the community for 42 years. He earned a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, took acting classes and performed in several local theater companies before retiring to Mesa, AZ in 2003. In retirement, he continued to do some voiceover work and enjoyed sketching portraits for family and friends. He was a life member of The National Eagle Scout Association, The Museum of Science Industry in Chicago and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife Hildred (Hildy) of 63 years, daughter Jennifer Cornwell (Bruce), son Scott (Lauri) and grandson Benjamin Buck. In keeping with his wishes, he was cremated with no formal service held. Donations in his honor can be made to any homeless/disabled veterans organization of your choice.
