Oscar was born in Bergen, Norway on July 31, 1921 to Ole Johannes Gjertsen and Ellen Nilsen.. The family emigrated to the USA and settled at Port Madison on Bainbridge Island and later moved to North Seattle. He graduated from Roosevelt High School. He joined the US Coast Guard in 1939 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. He was stationed on USCG Base Pier 4 in Pearl Harbor duing the bombing by the Japanese. He worked many years for the Seattle Times and was also an accomplished cabinet maker. He also served as Harbor Master at Shelter Bay in LaConnor, Wa. He died peacefully on December 13, 2016 at Providence Hospital in Everett, Washington. He was predeceased by his daughter Sharon and his siblings George, Marie, Evelyn and Emily. He is survived by his daughter Claudia and son Larry of California. He loved his annual salmon fishing trips to Sitka, Alaska with his nephew Eric Gjertsen and Eric's sons Ivan and Jason.
A grave side service is planned for on January 7,2016 at Evergreen- Washelli Cemetary in Seattle, Wahington. A Coast Guard Honor Guard will be present.
