PHILIP GEORGE DOYLE-by his wife, Myrna Harms-Doyle
My husband, Philip Doyle, 70, was born on 3/7/1946 in Providence, Rhode Island to Laura Nystedt and Charles Furrer. Phil's mother married a second time in 1957 to Haley V. Doyle and was adopted by him. On 9/24/16 he passed to his heavenly home succumbing to prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife, Myrna Harms-Doyle, his sister Joan Scarbrough, daughters, Jennifer Doyle, Amy Stalkup and son Andrew Doyle, step-daughter Joan Stephens, step-sons Nick & Jerry Harms, step-daughter Jody Ledman. His grand-children are Landon, Abby, Zachery, Allison, Sarah, Rachel, Sydney, Emma, Cole, Dylan, Jacob and Lucy.
The family moved several times through the years and ended up in Portland where Haley's family lived. He went to various Portland Public & catholic schools. A joy of his life was when his baby sister, Joanie, was born when he was 14.
Until age 5 Phil was raised by his maternal grand-parents. From his grandmother he learned about God and has often mentioned how his grandma & grandpa influenced his spiritual life. His mother loved music and had the radio on all day. Phil loved all kinds of music, especially Broadway. He has a collection of almost every musical ever produced! And he could name every song in each one of them! He was very enthusiastic about many things over his life, especially electronics---always the first to invest in a new toy. He liked CB radio and was active in a radio club using the handle H20K9 (water-dog). He also enjoyed fishing with his son Andrew, and later his grandson Landon. He had a talent for cross stitch and made me two beautiful creations as gifts--one was a palm tree & the other purple roses.
The teen-age years were very difficult for him because of his mischievous nature. He ended up at David Douglas High School for his senior year in 1963-64 where he met his high school sweetheart, Myrna Hart. They were very close for about a year before going their separate ways--for 45 years. He then joined the Army in October of 1964 and was sent to Italy for about 3 years doing radio communications eventually earning the rank of Sergeant (mainly because he wanted to eat in the officers club!!) He even got to go to Germany for 4 weeks because he had a medical issue, so he was able to tour Germany too!!
After his discharge in October of 1967 he returned to Portland where he held a variety of jobs, ending up at Parker Hannifin for 40 years where he made many good friends. He met and married Kathy Bissett in 1969 with whom he had a daughter, Jennifer, in 1974. They divorced in 1976.
In 1977 Phil married Janice Anderson and was blessed with an 11 year old step-daughter, Jody. Daughter Amy was born in 1979, and son Andrew was born in 1981. They divorced in 2011.
After attending a high school reunion, Phil & I became reacquainted. He came back into my life at a very sad time as my husband was very ill. After my husband passed away, Phil & I started dating and were married in 2012. With our marriage Phil gained 3 step-children and 8 grand-children. Talk about grand-children! They were the light of his life. He enjoyed many activities with them and was always telling them about Jesus. When he married me he gained 8 more grandchildren and enjoyed "cousins" day with them periodically. They could always make him smile, and teach him how to use the APPS on his phone, especially Pokemon!!
Phil's faith in Christ began to grow tremendously when he began attending Bible Study Fellowship-- an intensive study that taught him about Jesus and the Bible. Phil was growing fast spiritually as he attended church, listened to praise music, and began reading books like by prominent preachers, digesting and expressing his faith. His life changed spiritually and he became very close to the Lord. You will hear his favorite song, Jehovah-Jireh at the end of the service which means "The Lord will provide". The words to this praise song made him teary eyed every time. A book by RC Sproul entitled "Surprised by Suffering" gave him much encouragement through his illness.
When he found out the cancer was spreading Phil would tell you "I am not afraid, I have joy in my heart because heaven is waiting for me." He never got depressed or sad because of the cancer. Pain?--yes Grief at leaving us?--yes. He would be on the couch with his earphones on and I would look there because he was waving his hands in the air. "What are you doing??" I would ask and he would say "Praising Jesus!!" What a guy! He had a great calling to tell everyone about Jesus and was reaching out doing things to honor HIM. Volunteering at church, preparing communion, helping with youth ministry, reading his Bible, taking notes, asking questions of his Pastors. Always in prayer for his family & friends. Some may scoff hearing how devoted he was to Christ these last years because of his mistakes through his life. I say to you, with Jesus, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." John 8:7
And that my friends is the life story of my dear husband, Philip George Doyle, minus his secrets! (Some of which will be divulged by son Andrew, if you ask him.) God Bless you dear family and friends and many Thanks for all your support through this difficult time.
In closing, I would like to share with you a poem I wrote shortly after the death of my husband Wendell. Little did I know it would apply again this day with Philip. Based on Isaiah 7:9-B
Why do we suffer?
Why do we have pain?
When we see the answer,
We'd do it all again--
Because I choose to live by faith and not by fear…..
All things work together for our good we're told---
Weather we're young
Or when we're growing old
Trusting in His Word He gives us what we need--
When we choose to live by faith and not by fear…
Oh God I search for comfort living through this life
Earth has so much evil, sickness, pain and strife
When I cannot bear it I reach to take Your hand--
And I choose to live by faith and not by fear…..
I feel You so close Lord When I lift my heart to You
I know that you are with me no matter what I do
And I choose to live by faith and not by fear--YES
I choose to live by faith and not by fear!
