Ray Arlis Harner, age 80, passed away on April 18, 2019 in Thousand Oaks, CA.
Ray was born in Chicago, IL to Claud and Mildred (Starr) Harner on December 25, 1938. After graduating from Lena High School, he received his bachelor's degree in sociology from McPherson College, before moving to Los Angeles. He received his teaching credential and master's degree in psychology from Cal State Los Angeles and taught with Los Angeles Unified School District for 49 years.
He had a deep fondness for the outdoors, and spent his younger years fishing and hiking which led him to become a forest ranger during his summer vacations. In more recent years, he enjoyed taking long walks each morning and spending his days reading and gardening. He also had a passion for music, having been involved in choir and band, and playing the trombone throughout his school years.
Ray is survived by his second wife of almost 30 years, Myrna (Concepcion) Harner; children Koreen Cea, Marcel Harner, Gabrielle Brumbach, Colette O'Brien, and Marylou Harner; grandchildren Christina Cea, Thomas Cea, Reilly Brumbach, Sydney Brumbach, Lucas Brumbach, Emily O'Brien, Jack O'Brien, Bridget O'Brien, Audrey O'Brien, Kimberly Harner and Ryan Harner; and brother Carl Harner.
A memorial service will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church at 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the service. His ashes will be laid to rest at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles at a date to follow.
