Richard Lee Barnard

Richard Lee Barnard was born On June 7, 1930 at 2:50 AM to Kenneth W. and Alice C. (Mershan) Barnard in Portland, OR. He attended school in Portland, OR and graduated from Washington High School. He graduated from the ROTC program from the University of Portland and later graduated from The University of Southern California Institute of Aerospace Safety and Management with a Masters on August 11, 1967 while serving in Japan.

He started his military service in the reserves in and then on July 15, 1954 entered the active Air Force as a jet pilot. He left active duty on June 30, 1968 and went back to the reserves and finally retired from military service, June 07, 1990. He was very proud of his time serving the United States Air Force.
He had two siblings. His younger sister Barbara and younger brother David. They passed away years ago.

He married Catherine Louise Smith (Sadie Lee Powell) on July 21, 1957 and they had three children Ricky, Kenny/Rebecca, Shonda. They were divorces in June, 1976. He then remarried Debra K. Barnard (Boatner) 0n November 26, 1995. They had no children together. She had two children Stephany Shackelford and Rob Boatner and one granddaughter Kyra Boatner. Dick and Debby were still married at the time of his death.

Dick had been sick with Dementia and Alzheimer's for a long time and in care for the last seven years. Before that he had been active in many activities. He was elected Republican Precinct committeeperson for the 360 Precinct in Washington County. He was a working conductor for the Portland Trolly for five years and he always said it was his favorite job. He loved to share the history of Portland and was present best conductor award. He worked with Christian Northwest publication. He loved the Portland Trailblazers and he attended several with Kenny/Rebecca. She often tells the store of her and her dad seeing a playoff game and how exciting the last few seconds of the game were when the Trailblazers won.

Dick also loved to travel. He especially liked to go to San Diego and go over to Tijuana and go shopping. We went many times to the San Juan Islands and he loved going to the beach. There were many more trips short and long until he got sick. He also loved his pets. He had two a Pomeranian named Murphy and a Tibetan Spaniel named Kaylee. He also loved politics and had strong opinions.

He also loved to read and did up until the last few months of his life. He loved listening to music especially classical, folk, and Elvis. He also loved seeing the dogs that visited the facility including his two Kaylee and Dolly.

Dick was a member of the Church of Christ and was baptized September 15, 1996.

Dick passed away at 2:50 AM on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at the Expressions unit at Molalla Care Center in Molalla, OR. He breathed his last breath as Debby walked into the room. He was finally at peace and knew Debby would be alright.

Dick is survived by his wife and soulmate of almost twenty-four years Debby and his three children: Ricky, Kenny/Rebecca, and Shonda.

Dick's will have a military honors memorial at Willamette National Cemetery at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, Happy Valley, OR 97086
on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 10:30 AM.
