Richard (Dick) Madouse (88) passed away peacefully on March 28, 2023, surrounded by his wife, Joan, and other family members. He was born on May 3, 1934 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to William Henry Madouse and Anna Elizabeth Powers.

Captain Madouse, a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, reported to his first destroyer in San Diego, to commence a 27 year tour as a Surface Warrior.  All of his seagoing assignments were with Pacific Fleet ships home ported in San Diego or Pearl Harbor.  His initial tour of duty in USS HOPEWELL(DD-681) as Engineer Officer marked the beginning of a long relationship with surface ship engineering.

Subsequent sea tours included:  First Lieutenant, USS KAWISHIWI(AO-146), XO, USS CURRENT(ARS-22), Engineer Officer, USS FOX(DLG-33), and XO, USS HORNE(DLG-30).   Captain Madouse served as CO,USS RUPERTUS(DD-851) and CO, USS TURNER JOY(DD-951).

Captain Madouse was the first officer to serve two tours of duty as a Senior Examiner of the CINCPACFLT Propulsion Examining Board.  Captain Madouse was an Honors Graduate form the Naval War College Senior Course in 1977.  His final tour of duty was in Washington, DC, as Chairman, Conventional Marine Propulsion Training Steering Committee.

Post retirement activities included 13 years in senior positions with defense services firms , and 9 years of substitute teaching in the Coronado Unified School District.  Captain Madouse was a past President of the Optimist Club of Coronado.

He is survived by his wife Joan, five children, twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.  No services are planned.
