Richard John Schimberg

Col. Richard "Dick" J. Schimberg, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 at the age of 90 in San Diego, California. Richard was born in Fargo, North Dakota on April 20, 1927 and spent his childhood in Eugene, Oregon.

Richard was a well-respected officer in the U.S. Air Force who served multiple tours, including World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was known as a "pilot's pilot," skilled in flying a variety of air crafts involved in direct combat and special forces, including the B-25 Mitchell Bomber, F-86 Sabre Jet, C-7 Caribou and C-130 Hercules among others. After nearly 30 years of service, Richard retired from the Air Force in 1976 at Travis Air Force Base, California.

In addition, Richard was a proud alumnus of Arizona State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's in business administration in 1951, and George Washington University, where he received a master of business administration in 1964. After retiring from the military, he worked as Assistant Vice President of Home Savings of America for many years.

His hobbies included flying, sailing, traveling, reading, bicycle riding, and attending sporting events, especially San Diego Padres games.

Richard was an active member of his community and enjoyed volunteering in myriad outlets, including the San Diego Air and Space Museum at Balboa Park, Maritime Museum of San Diego, the America's Cup, San Diego Harbor Police Department Reserve Senior Volunteer Patrol Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters program and the Special Olympics. He also served on the board of directors for Central City Association, Senior Community Centers of San Diego and the Rotary Club of Point Loma.

He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Jo Schimberg, of San Diego, California; six children, Jeff Schimberg, of Wilmington, North Carolina, Christina Garcia Schimberg, of Sonoma, California, Peter Stasko, of Pueblo, Colorado, Michael Stasko, of San Diego, California, John Schimberg, of Vacaville, California and Lisa Gaskin, of San Diego, California; six grandchildren, Kristina Stasko, Josh Schimberg, Justin Schimberg, Scott Schimberg, Jennifer Gaskin and Ashley Jensen; and a great-grandson, Dare Jack Jensen.
