Robert Lindsay Elliott was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933. He was the eldest of four children and grew up during World War II. He held various jobs before working as a deckhand on a large sailboat when he was 15 years old. He sailed to Norway and thus began his lifelong love of sailing and traveling. At age 17 he read in the newspaper that the British government would provide a place to live and a job in Australia if one lived there for two years. He decided to go, and in 1951 he took a cargo ship to Tasmania, Australia with his friend. He lived and worked on several farms there. He later came to America because his mother’s health was declining. He served in the army to get his citizenship more quickly, and was eventually stationed at Fort Richardson, outside of Anchorage, Alaska.
After the army he settled in Seattle, went to community college, and started working for Xerox as a repair technician. He was promoted to manager and worked for Xerox for 30 years. He married, had two daughters, and took his family on camping trips to Canada and the western United States. He enjoyed living in the country and raising sheep. After his daughters grew up, he bought a sailboat and lived many more years sailing and travelling the world. His family fondly remembers his love of sailing, traveling, and his Scottish heritage. Lindsay was a humble, gentle, cheerful and friendly soul who lifted our spirits with his genial demeanor. Everyone who met him liked him. He was a beautiful light in our lives and is greatly missed by his friends and family.
