Robert Harvey Sulzen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted friend, passed away on February 25, 2025 at age 85. As his Parkinson’s disease advanced, his sense of humor and gentility never wavered. Born on March 16, 1939, to Marvin and Wilberta (Kirkendall) Sulzen, Robert was the cherished only child of his parents. In 1961 he married the love of his life, Kathleen Ann Baldwin. Together, they raised seven children, “all sons except for five daughters,” as Robert loved to say. His love for the military, scouting, music, chess, and his family filled his life with joy.
Robert earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Physical education, and Doctorate of Education at UCLA. Through mentorship and his own tenacity, he was a respected Army Research Psychologist in the Army Research Institute for over 28 years. Robert also served his country in the United States Army. Although he retired from active duty as a captain, he remained in both the National Guard and the Army Reserves. An accomplished military officer, Robert trained as an Airborne Ranger and achieved the rank of Colonel in the Army Reserves and National Guard, earning the Expert Infantry Badge at age 50. Robert retired from the military after 34 years of service. His career, marked by dedication, reflected his strong character and commitment to his country. Robert was also a Boy Scout Leader for over 30 years, where he mentored many young men.
Robert was a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ and a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many different capacities throughout the years, including 14 years as a temple worker. Robert’s life is a reflection of his faith. He always found ways to serve others, share his testimony, and fulfill his responsibilities with integrity.
Robert's steadfastness, determination, and unwavering love will continue to affect those privileged to receive it, though he is no longer with us. His legacy of humor, faith, service, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His steady, kind, and patient nature will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Robert is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children Mark (Linda) Sulzen, Dan (Cheryl) Sulzen, Ann Marie (John) Nuckols, Sherri (Brett) Galbraith, Karen (Dan) Matthews, Mary (Jordan) Rudd; 21 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held on March 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15940 Old Conroe Rd, Conroe, TX.
