Sandra Marcia Alpert (née Boritz), a 1958 graduate of Mt. Sinai Nursing School and faithful alumni, passed away on October 3, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Born August 15, 1935, Sandy’s determination to extend her education took her from Mt. Sinai on to earn her BS at Mercy College, her BS in Nursing at Dominican College and finally her Master’s in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College.
Sandy’s nursing career primarily focused on public health, nursing education and geriatric care. Her proudest accomplishment was establishing and achieving accreditation for a practical nursing program at Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers - a program that Elizabeth Seton was well known for and carries on at Iona University. She also served on the executive board for District 17 of the New York State Nurses Association and the New York State Council of Practical Nursing Programs.
Sandy retired to San Diego, California in 1984 with Walter, her husband of 63 years, whom she met at the Mt. Sinai Valentine’s Dance. Although technically retired, she worked for many years as a Nursing Home administrator and volunteered into her 70’s at various clinics and hospitals.
Sandy is survived by her three children, Rob, Karen, and Lisa; her six grandchildren; her sister Carole, also a Mt. Sinai alum; and brother Michael.
Her legacy lives on in every nurse she trained, every patient she comforted, and in the countless lives she touched with her fierce love and radiant spirit.
