Sharon Rose Hunter Mulhern

Sharon Rose Hunter Mulhern, a beloved figure in her community and a dedicated educator, passed peacefully on September 20, 2024, in West Covina, California. Born on June 18, 1943, in Nampa, Idaho, Sharon lived a life characterized by her profound love for teaching, her generous spirit, and her passion for creating joyful memories with those she cherished.

After attending her first day of school, Sharon returned home and announced that she was going to become a teacher.  She never wavered from that dream.  Sharon earned a Master’s Degree from California State Los Angeles University and devoted 33 years to the field of education as a Special Education Teacher. Her commitment to her students was unwavering, and her influence extended far beyond the classroom. In 1979, Sharon was honored with the Honorary Service Award, recognizing her extraordinary contributions and dedication to her students and the community. She also played a significant role with the Miss Softball America, attending tournaments and jamborees, affirming her belief in fostering young talent.

One of the highlights of Sharon’s life was her love for Disneyland. She cherished the magic of the park, taking her students there on her own time and expense year after year, ensuring they experienced educational opportunities and wonder. This love extended to her friends and family, who were often invited to join her on these excursions. Sharon had a unique tradition; upon entering Disneyland, she mandated a group photo to capture the moment of excitement and togetherness, showcasing her appreciation for shared experiences.

Family was paramount in Sharon’s life. Her nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in watching them grow. Children were always the focal point of her attention, whether as a teacher or as a foster parent and grandparent. Her nurturing nature and dedication to youth created lasting impressions on all the lives she touched.

Sharon now joins her husband, Tom Mulhern; her beloved mother, Olla Jane Rutan; her father, Eldon Hunter; her sister, Bonnie Molt; 2 nieces, Annette Johnson, Gerry Ostermiller; a nephew David Gifford, and many cherished cousins and close friends who preceded her in death.

As we remember Sharon Rose Hunter Mulhern, we celebrate a life filled with love for education, kindness towards others, and a zest for creating magical moments. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.

Sharon requested no funeral or memorial; rather she preferred donations to be made to City of Hope Cancer Center because with their help she was blessed with 24 more years of life.
