Stephen Blair Clayton, 82, known affectionately as Steve to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in Hemet, California, on January 2, 2025. Born in Shelbyville, Indiana, on April 2, 1942, Steve's journey through life was marked by dedication, humor, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
Steve's life was shared with his beloved wife of 61 years, Evelyn Clayton, with whom he built a legacy of love and family. Together, they raised their children Stephen (Deborah) Clayton, Christie (Michael) Porter, and Michael (Suzanne) Clayton, who in turn blessed them with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The Clayton family home was always filled with laughter, stories, and the kind of wisdom that only a man like Steve could impart.
After honorably serving his country as an Airman in the Air Force during the Vietnam Campaign, Steve dedicated his career to public service. He earned a Master of Public Administration and was employed in various roles for the County of Orange, California. His commitment to community service continued well into his retirement in 1998, when he became the Hemet City Clerk. Steve's passion for helping others was also evident in his work as a tax professional and as the treasurer of his community's property owner’s association. Even his leisure time as a golf course marshal reflected his love for order and the joy he found in being amongst people.
Steve's interests were as varied as they were spirited. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, with whom he shared countless memorable moments. His trips to the casino were always full of excitement and laughter, and his love for dancing kept his spirit young at heart. An avid golfer, Steve could often be found on the green, where his passion and competitive spirit shone through. Those who knew Steve will remember him as a passionate man who approached life with a generous heart and a sense of humor that could light up any room. His ability to find joy in the everyday and to make others feel cherished was one of his most admirable qualities.
As Mark Twain once said, "The secret of getting ahead is getting started." Steve lived by these words, always proactive in his endeavors and encouraging others to do the same. Steve Clayton's legacy is one of love, service, and joy. He will be deeply missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. His influence will continue to be felt through the laughter of his great-grandchildren, the community projects he supported, and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and humor. As we bid farewell to Steve, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a man well-loved. Though he may be gone, the stories, values, and love he shared will remain with us forever. Stephen Blair Clayton's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
