Stephen Alexander Nigro, 75, of Orlando, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025. Born on May 27, 1949, in Blue Island, Illinois, to Dominic Alexander “Alex” Nigro and Dorothy Louise (Duffels) Nigro, Stephen lived a vibrant and impactful life, defined by his tireless work ethic, deep devotion to his family, and unwavering commitment to his community and faith.
A proud graduate of Bremen Community High School, Class of 1967, Stephen spent 30 years in Crown Point, Indiana, before moving to Orlando. Known for his industrious spirit, he built a distinguished career at US Steel Gary Works, retiring in 2003 after decades of hard work. Following his retirement, he embraced a semi-retired life in Orlando, where he continued to contribute his talents at Walt Disney World until 2009.
Stephen is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Gayle Irene (Gresens) Nigro, with whom he created a legacy of love, mutual support, and family. Together, they raised their children—Stephen Paul (Tonya) Nigro, Michael Alan (Cyndee) Nigro, and Timothy Jon Nigro—with Stephen being a constant, hands-on presence in their lives. His dedication extended to his grandchildren—Lindsey (Caleb) Blanchard, Kristen (Michael) Clutch, Thomas Nigro, and Olivia Nigro—and great-grandchildren, Niko Blanchard and Leo Blanchard, all of whom he cherished deeply. He is also survived by his sister, Lorraine (Craig) Schweingueber; brother-in-law, Robert (Margaret) Gresens; nieces Clara Gresens and Lilly Mattson; and great-niece Delilah Magana. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Eugene Nigro.
A pillar in the Crown Point community, Stephen was renowned for his volunteerism, particularly in youth sports. He coached and organized Little League Baseball, Panther Football, and Pups Basketball, and lent his talents to boys wrestling and girls track at Andrean High School. His involvement went beyond athletics—he was a steadfast supporter of his children’s endeavors, attending every event, offering guidance, and instilling values of perseverance and kindness. His influence as a mentor and leader touched countless lives, earning him respect and admiration.
Stephen’s faith was a cornerstone of his life as he lived out those values with compassion and integrity.
A Catholic Mass celebrating Stephen’s extraordinary life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church 5125 S Apopka Vineland Rd, Orlando, FL 32819. A private interment will take place at a later date at Fairmont Cemetery in Willow Springs, Illinois.
