Obituary
Urilda Emelda Ferguson
March 2, 1936 - June 18, 2013
Urilda Emelda Ferguson was born in Plymouth, Tobago and passed peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of the morning, in Gilroy, California. A service was held for her at Skylawn Memorial Park in Woodside, California on June 21, 2013.
She is survived by her brother Hucil George, and her niece Shurland Defreitas. She was the beloved mother of eight children - Desmond Noelyn George, Morgan Aldolphus Ferguson, Fitzroy Nathaniel Ferguson, Bernice Ferguson, Marilyn Susan Ferguson, Keith Alexander Ferguson, Maria Alicia Daniels, and Milcah Elizabeth Ferguson.
She also survived by her grandchildren Shawn George, Mary Ferguson, Michael Ferguson, Kristian Ferguson, Michael Cortez Antonio Ferguson, Gregory Leslie Jones, Tony Russell, Urilda Marie Ruth McReynolds, Bibianne Bianca Ferguson, Prunella Thomas; and leaves behind, her beloved Great grandchildren, Jade Elizabeth McReynolds, Desmond George III, Ian George, Jasmine George, Charmain Jones, Charlene Jones, Ebony Jones, Grace Jones, China Jones, and Aniya Russell. She is also survived by her favorite parakeet, Patsy.
In her late thirties, Urilda moved to St.Croix, Virgin Islands. She was a lover of crime stories, and soon immigrated to the United States so that she could live in Chicago - home city of the infamous Al Capone. She enjoyed sewing, and was an excellent seamstress. She also liked to knit, and loved to travel. Another great joy, in addition to cooking for her family, was dabbling on the slot machines of Gulfport, Mississippi.
Urilda was a great believer in giving back to her communities. She donated regularly to various charities to help children, including a school for First Nation children in the Southwest, and the Red Cross,
In Chicago, she was employed as nursing assistant, caring for patients in their homes. She then worked for the University of Illinois, and retired in the year 2000. Since then, she has been caring for her grandchildren in Chicago, then lived in California with her daughter, Bernice. She was living in Gilroy, California at the time of her passing.
Urilda was a courageous, strong woman who raised eight children on her own. In addition, she mentored and served as a second mother for many of the students she encountered in her job at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Many of those children remained in touch long after she left her employment there. She loved people. She was open and supportive, and she was loved by a wide array of friends and family. She was a lover of life, and one of her greatest joys was feeding people. Her goat curry was famous, and was enjoyed by her family and friends from Tobago to Chicago. She cooked for her children and co-workers alike. She had a generous spirit.
She was also a strict disciplinarian, and was loved and respected by her children. Her rules were the law, and she raised her children with a strong but gentle hand. She was a no-nonsense disciplinarian, but she was always open to listening and helping where she could. She encouraged us all to pursue higher education, and to always do the best in whatever we chose. She always said that she wanted her passing to be joyful, with singing, dancing and good food - a celebration, not a funeral. She will be missed.
Urilda often read the bible for guidance and comfort. Her favorite Psalm was the 23rd:
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
