Virginia Lee Wood

Virginia Wood, 94, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love in her Adult Family Home in Seattle, WA on May, 28, 2019. She was born on a wheat homestead in Willard, CO in August of 1924, the youngest child of William and Pearl Sandstead's eight children. She was descended from Swedish immigrants who homesteaded in Nebraska.

Her childhood was influenced by the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Era that impacted the family farm. Her parents took on odd jobs to make ends meet. Ingenuity and humor helped the family grow strong and resilient in those tough times and shaped her core belief, "All things work together for good to them that love God."

Her school days were filled with music and sports. She enjoyed singing and performing in Operettas, Glee Club and Quartets. She attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 1943 where she excelled in Basketball, winning the League Basketball Championship.
Virginia left college to care for her widowed brother's two-year-old son. In her early twenties she became a school teacher and taught 2nd and 8th Grades in Fleming, Co.

She married James O. Wood, a Methodist Minister and WWII Veteran, in Colorado Springs in June 1947. Two years later they had their first daughter, Sarahjane. The family moved to Seattle, WA when James gained employment at The Boeing Company in 1951. They had two more daughters, Debby and Tami. James and Virginia were married 65 years until James' passing in December 2012.

Virginia was a lifelong member of the United Methodist church. Her passion was to sing solos & duets. This was something she enjoyed doing up until the last few months of her life. She was a member of the Sunset View Garden Clubs for 35 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, a Jobs Daughter Guardian, and First Lady of the Nile Shiners in 1999.

Virginia enjoyed singing, winning golf awards at Fairwood County Club, playing cards, playing her organ, tending the flowers in her garden, attending & supporting Masonic functions with her husband, shooting hoops with the grandkids, making her special apple crisp, and attending family gatherings. She especially enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh.

Virginia is predeceased by her 4 brothers and 3 sisters, her grandson Alex Capperauld and her husband, James Wood.

She is survived by her 3 daughters; Sarahjane Harcourt and husband James, Debby Kinsley and husband Mike, Tami Capperauld and husband Andy. 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

All that knew Virginia will miss her sparkling blue eyes, beautiful smile, and shared laughter over a good joke.
