Weldon Wright passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by love and family, on Sunday, March 2nd. He was born on April 11, 1934, in Dallas, Texas to Willy Mae and Johnie Wright. Weldon grew up in Dallas and attended Richardson High School. After graduating he attended North Texas State University where he played football for the Eagles and was a member of the Geezles Fraternity. He later received his Master’s Degree from East Texas State University.
After graduating from college, he was recruited to try out for the San Francisco 49ers, but never got the chance because he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Army from July 1957 to July 1963 and worked as a cryptograph operator. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he went to work as a football coach at Arlington High School and then was promoted to the Director of Physical Education for the Arlington School System.
Weldon married Barbara June Ellis on January 29, 1960 at the Mansfield First Baptist Church. She was the love of his life and they had two children Brooks and Kelley. Weldon lived a long, happy, productive life and he touched the lives of many. He was kind, selfless and possessed a generosity that was unparalleled. Family always came first and Weldon’s greatest joy was being papaw to his grandkids, Anthony and Courtney Wright and Bryce Claxton. He was also a great papaw to Emberlyn Lockwood. His favorite pastime was working at his ranch in Hico, Texas and watching his beloved Texas Longhorns.
Weldon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, his son Brooks and daughter Kelley and son in law Mike Claxton and his sisters Judy Reneau and Kathleene Harris. He also has many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Billy Jean and her husband Jessie Hutchison and brother-in-law's Paul Harris and Ken Reneau.
We deeply miss our dear husband, father, brother and uncle. We will treasure the countless wonderful memories we have of Weldon’s loving and larger than life presence.
