WHITEY (JOHN B.) COREJULY 24, 1934 ''' SEPTEMBER 8, 2012Born In Okemah, Oklahoma to Robert and Marie Core. Whitey was the third of four siblings. The family moved to Compton, California when he was 5 years old. His parents divorced and at his request he lived with his Grannie. The rest of the family lived close by. He attended Catholic Grade School, Compton High School where he earned many athletic awards and accolades in football and baseball. He was a member of the Compton High Tarbabes. He attended Compton Junior College. There he received a football scholarship to the University of Washington. He and his wife and baby daughter moved to Seattle.He played both offense and defense. Whitey wore the least amount of padding possible, so he could be a faster and more efficient guard. Whitey went on to be a defensive coach under head coach Jim Owens when they won two Rose Bowls. He also was a player/coach for the semi-pro Edmonds Warriors and Seattle Ramblers. From 1960 to 1964 he owned and operated the End Zone Tavern in the University District. From 1964 to 1970 he was a sales rep for Rainier Beer; 1976 to 1981 a sales rep for Borden/Arno Tape; 1984 to 1990 area division manager for Merchant Medals (fencing); 1992 to 1995 he owned a Mr. Rooter franchise.Whitey is survived by his loving partner Patsy Schmidt and by his daughter Darrilyn (Ron) Miller of Oregon and son Rick Core of California, his sisters Wanda Jean, Lois Ann, and brother Robert Herman Core, all of California. Whitey will be lovingly and sadly missed by his partner Patsy Schmidt and by his many great friends, especially Monte Ostrom and Denny Frank. At his request there will be no service.
